Pharmacy technician certification is not a requirement for a job in many cases but sometimes an employer will require that the employee is certified as a pharmacy technician. To become a certified pharmacy technician, you must be administered an examination that is offered through either the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians. Once the applicant passes the examination they are officially recognized as a certified pharmacy technician.

Pharmacy technicians are responsible for several jobs and duties within a pharmacy that help the pharmacist complete their work. They are required to take prescriptions from patients, to fill those prescriptions by filling pill bottles with the correct number of capsules, and to label the bottles with prescription information. Pharmacy technicians also keep files on the prescriptions that are filled for each patient or customer. The certification examination relates to the work of a pharmacy technician and therefore includes many of these things.

Pharmacy Technician Certification Board

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is a national certification program that enables pharmacy technicians to work more effectively with pharmacists to offer safe and effective patient care and service. PTCB provides certification and recertification programs and services that offer pharmacy technicians an opportunity to demonstrate a mastery of and skills across practice settings.

Individuals who meet all eligibility requirements and who successfully pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) and may use the designation “CPhT” after their name.

CPhTs will earn higher incomes and more promotion opportunities. Benefits to becoming a CPhT include enhanced their self-worth, improved job satisfaction, increased knowledge, and the ability to make a positive impact on patient care. Employers trust that with PTCB certification, the CPhTs they work with have met predetermined qualifications proven by a passing the PTCE.

Pharmacy Technician Certification Requirements

Applicants who wish to write the certification examination have to meet several requirements before they are allowed to write the exam and gain pharmacy technician certification. All those, wanting to become certified must show:

  • Proof of a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Have no felony convictions in resident state in the past
  • Have not been convicted for drug or pharmacy related crimes in the past

In addition to these requirements, applicants also have to pay to take the certification examination but in many cases, employers will reimburse any costs. Once a pharmacy technician is certified, they are required to be re-certified every two years. To do this, pharmacy technicians have to complete twenty hours of additional education in those two years.

You can apply PTCE online, the application fee is $129. Once you have completed the application and received an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter, you can schedule a PTCE appointment online through Pearson VUE or by calling (866) 902-0593. Attend Pharmacy Technician Classes

There are ways for a pharmacy technician to improve their chance of becoming certified. Chances of passing the administered examination and gaining pharmacy technician certification can be increased by completing a pharmacy technician training program. These training programs are made available by organizations such as hospitals, colleges and the military.

The programs all vary in the subjects that are taught but most focus on subject areas that include terminology, record-keeping, and calculations of pharmaceuticals. By completing these programs, pharmacy technicians will have a better knowledge of aspects within the job which will help them with the examination and will make it easier to become certified.

Employment growth for pharmacy technicians is expected to be much greater than average over the next several years and there are expected to be good job opportunities. However, those who are in search of pharmacy technician positions and possess pharmacy technician certification will have a much better chance of securing a job than those who are not certified.

Having certification and experience as a pharmacy technicians will also open up other career opportunities. These pharmacy technicians may be able to move up to supervisory positions or eventually pharmacists.
